State Archives of Latvia

The state archival system Latvia consists of Latvia State Historical Archives, State Archives of Latvia, Latvia State Archive of Audio-visual Documents, State Archive of Personnel Records, 11 Regional State Archives; as well as the Archival Inspection and the Conservation Laboratory. All the work is carried out under the guidance and supervision of the Directorate General of Latvia State Archives.

The state archives have collected a great number of sources on political, social and cultural history, the oldest ones dating back to the 13th century and with total amount reaching over 145.4 thousand linear meters. To ensure the preservation and acquisition of essential evidence the archives are overseeing the record management of the state institutions and local communities.

Co-operating with other institutions and non-governmental organisations archives of Latvia take a part in the various projects for preserving and accumulating cultural heritage and joining it to an integrated, easy accessible information system.
